Welcome to another Bookish Friday, in which we share excerpts from books…and connect with other bloggers who do the same.
Let’s begin the celebration by sharing Book Beginnings, hosted by Rose City Reader; and let’s showcase The Friday 56 with Freda’s Voice.
To join in, just grab a book and share the opening lines…along with any thoughts you wish to give us; then turn to page 56D and excerpt anything on the page.
Then give us the title of the book, so others can add it to their lists! What a great way to spend a Friday!
Today I am choosing my First Book of the Year as my pick: Piece of My Heart, by Mary Higgins Clark and Alafair Burke.
***
Book Beginning: Laurie Moran flinched at the sound of yet another horn honking, this time from the pickup truck behind them.
From the driver’s seat, Charlotte Pierce glanced in the rearview mirror and threw up a frustrated hand. “I don’t know where he expects me to go.”
***
Friday 56: Then suddenly one day, Sandra paused before answering, and then broke down into tears. At first, Michelle had been getting good grades as a student at the University of Baltimore, but after two years, she took some time off.

Description:Television producer Laurie Moran and her fiancée, Alex Buckley, the former host of her investigative television show, are just days away from their mid-summer wedding, when things take a dark turn. Alex’s seven-year-old nephew, Johnny, vanishes from the beach. A search party begins and witnesses recall Johnny playing in the water and collecting shells behind the beach shack, but no one remembers seeing him after the morning. As the sun sets, Johnny’s skim board washes up to shore, and everyone realizes that he could be anywhere, even under water.
A ticking clock, a sinister stalker, and fresh romance combine in this exhilarating follow up to the bestselling You Don’t Own Me—another riveting page-turner from the “Queen of Suspense” Mary Higgins Clark and her dazzling partner-in-crime Alafair Burke.

What do you think? I am definitely into this one, as it is also my First Book of the Year.

She is one of my all time favorite authors, although I haven’t read one of hers in awhile. This one really sounds good and a great way to start the year. Enjoy!

Hi Laurel-Rain! I’m a closet case Mary Higgins Clark super-fan and my sister has only her books on her shelves. Or mostly. She doesn’t read as much as I do!
I would love to read this and it gets some great reviews. Maybe it’s because she passed away last year, or maybe (hopefully) it’s because it’s really good! Keep me posted…
Happy New Year Laurel-Rain!

Thanks, Mareli, I have been a fan of hers for years, although I still have a couple of them that I haven’t yet read.

Hi Lorraine,
I too, haven’t read a MHC book in some years, although she used to be one of my favourite authors. I don’t think I have read any Alafair Burke. It seems that this collaborative series is working really well for them both though, so that’s the second 2021 addition to my TBR pile already.
Thanks for sharing and let’s hope that 2021 is a much kinder year to us all 🙂

Thanks, Yvonne, I’ve enjoyed this collaborative series, and I’ve also read and enjoyed books from each of them writing alone.
Happy 2021!

This sounds so good! I feel like I really should read more of Mary Higgins Clark since I have enjoyed the few books that I have read. It is sad that we lost her this year.

Yes, Carole, I felt sad about that, too, and I was happy to have one final book from this series I have been enjoying.

MHC is a great choice for a first book! Her books are so much fun. It’s been to long since I’ve picked up anything by her.
