Welcome to another Bookish Friday, in which I share excerpts from books…and connect with other bloggers, who do the same.
Let’s begin the celebration by sharing Book Beginnings, hosted by Rose City Reader; and let’s showcase The Friday 56 with Freda’s Voice.
To join in, just grab a book and share the opening lines…along with any thoughts you wish to give us; then turn to page 56 and excerpt anything on the page.
Then give us the title of the book, so others can add it to their lists!
What a great way to spend a Friday!
Today’s featured book is a recent download: Sunburn, by Laura Lippman, a superb novel of psychological suspense about a pair of lovers with the best intentions and the worst luck: two people locked in a passionate yet uncompromising game of cat and mouse. But instead of rules, this game has dark secrets, forbidden desires, inevitable betrayals—and cold-blooded murder.
Beginning: (June 11, 1995, Belleville, Delaware)
It’s the sunburned shoulders that get him. Pink, peeling. The burn is two days old, he gauges. Earned on Friday, painful to the touch yesterday, today an itchy soreness that’s hard not to keep fingering, probing, as she’s doing right now in an absentminded way.

56: It takes twenty-five minutes to get to his office and that’s despite knowing all the shortcuts. The strip center is his last commercial property. Twelve stores, a parking lot, a wedge of Route 40 that gets a little seedier every year. (56%).
***
Synopsis: They meet at a local tavern in the small town of Belleville, Delaware. Polly is set on heading west. Adam says he’s also passing through. Yet she stays and he stays—drawn to this mysterious redhead whose quiet stillness both unnerves and excites him. Over the course of a punishing summer, Polly and Adam abandon themselves to a steamy, inexorable affair. Still, each holds something back from the other—dangerous, even lethal, secrets.
Then someone dies. Was it an accident, or part of a plan? By now, Adam and Polly are so ensnared in each other’s lives and lies that neither one knows how to get away—or even if they want to. Is their love strong enough to withstand the truth, or will it ultimately destroy them?
Something—or someone—has to give.
Which one will it be?
Inspired by James M. Cain’s masterpieces The Postman Always Rings Twice, Double Indemnity, and Mildred Pierce, Sunburn is a tantalizing modern noir from the incomparable Laura Lippman.

Do you want to keep reading? I know that I do, as I’ve never been disappointed in a book from Laura Lippman.

Oh, wow, it is hard to pick, Anne…but I do love the Tess Monaghan series (Baltimore Blues). That character is so intriguing. The first one I read was The Girl in the Green Raincoat…and although that one was not the first in the series, I was hooked.
Thanks for stopping by…and enjoy!

I’ve had enough sunburns that the beginning makes me squirm a bit! I’ve seen this book around but don’t know that much about it. Can’t wait to see your thoughts on it!

Thanks, Katherine, I could almost feel that sunburn from reading the lines. I try not to get sunburn these days…but when I was young, I was pretty careless. Sigh.
Enjoy your books!

I’m glad I’m native, don’t burn much at all. Sounds like a good read though. I’m intrigued as to why sunburns bother him so…
Happy weekend!

I’ve been seeing this book around. I like the genre but will be waiting until I see a few reviews before I add it to my stack. I’m spotlighting Lake Silence by Anne Bishop – her latest set in the world of The Others. Happy reading!

A new book for me, and I’d definitely go on reading! It does sound like James M. Cain, and I loved Double Indemnity, so I might have to take a look at this one. Thanks for sharing.

Is it wrong for me to want one of the characters to be the murderer? It would make the novel very exciting, haha. Hope you enjoy your weekend!
