Good morning! Today’s post will link up to The Sunday Salon, The Sunday Post and Stacking the Shelves, for weekly updates.
**Mailbox Monday is hosted at the home site: Mailbox Monday.
And let’s join Kathryn, our leader in It’s Monday! What Are You Reading?, at Book Date.
The past week brought a cooling trend: yes, down in the 90s, but better than triple digits. Could we be on our way to fall? Maybe not just yet, as the District Fair is coming in early October, and in all the years (46) that I’ve lived in these parts, it is always hot during the fair. But knowing what to expect is better than not knowing. I think.
It has been a week of reading, reviewing, and blogging. Three books read, with my total for the Read the Books You Buy Challenge now at 80!
No Netflix viewing this week. I did watch some old and favorite movies (feel good movies) like Julie and Julia. I love that one! I also watched Jackie again. I guess I needed comfort viewing. However, I also watched The Sinners, and the season finale episodes of The Fosters and The Bold Type. Cliff hangers, of course.
I have a few movies still on the DVR for this weekend…and maybe I’ll see what I can find on Netflix. Later in the month comes a movie starring Jane Fonda and Robert Redford: Our Souls at Night. I can’t wait!
I’ve been seeing previews for this movie all week, so I must go to the neighborhood theater and see it! Home Again, with Reese Witherspoon, etc.
Let’s grab some coffee and look back at the week. The mug is a favorite, and reads: Just for Today, Be Happy. I like that sentiment.
LAST WEEK ON THE BLOGS:

INCOMING BOOKS: (Titles/Covers Linked to Amazon)
One Vine Review Book came in my mailbox! And like a crazy person, I purchased five downloads.
Happy People Read and Drink Coffee, by Agnes Martin-Lugand
***
Downloads:
The Heirs (e-book), by Susan Rieger
Lie to Me (e-book), by J. T. Ellison
Genuine Fraud (e-book), by E. Lockhart
The Summer That Made Us (e-book), by Robyn Carr
***
And the final download is a re-read…I used to have this book, and I think it went out the door during one of my purges. Sigh. This week, I watched the movie again (I have the DVD) starring Jennifer Connelly and Ben Kingsley, and I always cry at the end…so I just had to read the book again. I’m not sure when I’ll get around to it, but I like that it’s there, waiting.
House of Sand and Fog (e-book), by Andre Dubus III

WHAT’S NEXT?
Currently Reading: The Burning Girl (e-book), by Claire Messud
***
Then I have another NetGalley review book to read this week:
The Best Kind of People (e-book), by Zoe Whittall (Release Date – 9/19)
And maybe this one:
I’ll Have What She’s Having (e-book), by Erin Carlson ( I love this cover, and I’m a big fan of Nora Ephron and these movies).

That’s my week. What did yours look like? I had a different kind of repast at Mimi’s one night this week. Quiche says fall to me. And, of course, I had my book companion.

Wow, hadn’t heard they made a movie of Our Souls at Night. Did you read the book? I loved it.
Is Home Again based on a book? I’ve seen the ads – looking forward to your thoughts. Have a nice week and enjoy those cooler temps.

There is a Kristin Hannah book called Home Again, but the character names are different. Maybe they changed them for the movie? I guess I’ll know more after the movie…LOL.
I didn’t realize that Our Souls at Night was based on a book, but now I must get it!
Thanks for stopping by, Mary.

I know what you mean about “cooling trends”. We are in Florida waiting on the hurricane. At least it will lower the temps for a couple days, especially since we won’t have AC. Enjoy all your books.

I have to admit this week I’m a little bit jealous of your heat as we seem to have had enough wind and rain to last the whole winter already and it’s only September! You have treated yourself to some good looking books this week though 🙂

Thanks for stopping by, Cleo, and wind and rain can definitely get old fast. Something moderate, something in between would be good…sending positive thoughts.
I did get carried away with the books again…I know I’m going to enjoy them! Have a great week.

The 90F weather does feel cooler after last week, I have to admit. I’d like to think that fall is on its way, but I can see it heating up again before long. Summer never likes to give up easily. Home Again does look good. I hope you get to see it and enjoy it! I haven’t seen the movie or read the book of House and Sand and Fog, but I hear it is a tear-jerker. I really should give it a try. I am looking forward to The Best Kind of People. I hope you enjoy it!
I am enjoying the weekend so far. My husband and daughter took me out for breakfast this morning in honor of my birthday. Now I’m settled in for a little computer time. I hope you have a wonderful week, Laurel-Rain.

Your birthday breakfast sounds wonderful, Wendy…I do enjoy a breakfast out, too, especially with family.
I never get tired of watching House of Sand and Fog…and always cry at the end. I haven’t read the book in a while, though, so I’m looking forward to it.
Have a great week! You’re right that summer doesn’t give up easily.

It certainly feels like autumn here! It was “warm” only one day this week – the rest of the days seemed so cold. 60-degree weather is what I’m finding cold these days, LOL. I like fall though. I’m not looking forward to 20-degree weather. -_-
I hope you enjoy all of your new books! Have a fabulous weekend, Laurel. =)

I liked the movie Jackie, which I finally bought for my Amazon Prime collection. Enjoy your week!

Ooh the 90’s huh? Pretty bad when THAT feels like a cooling trend right? We’ve cooled off too, still nice during the day but cool at night, down in the 40’s. Woot! I kinda like it. 🙂
I need to try The Sinners, I keep seeing promos for it. And Reese Witherspoon is awesome!
Happy People Read and Drink Coffee might be one of the better book titles I’ve seen! And Genuine Fraud I’m genuinely curious about lol.
Quiche? YUM! Haven’t had that in ages…

Thanks for visiting, Greg, and I agree that it’s pretty sad when the 90s are a cooling trend. I’ll take it over triple digits, though, and soon, hopefully, we’ll see 70s and 80s. At night, we’re now down in the 60s.
I also love the title of Happy People Read and Drink Coffee, and since I liked We Were Liars by Lockhart, I am looking forward to Genuine Fraud.
Have a great week, and I am a big fan of Quiche, although I don’t have it very often.

House of Sand & Fog — that’s an intense novel! but man did it suck me in; it’s a good movie too. And gosh the last time Redford & Fonda were in a film — wasn’t it The Electric Horseman? Remember that movie? Seems a long while ago. I look forward to their new movie. I should read that book beforehand, pronto. Enjoy your week.

Thanks for visiting, Susan, and The Electric Horseman was the last one I recall with the two of them. I just downloaded the book Our Souls at Night…after finding out there was one.
Not that long ago, I remember watching Barefoot in the Park, and it was such a different experience for me than it was in the 60s. Time, perspective, I guess.
I never tire of watching (and crying over) House of Sand & Fog. I felt bad for everybody in the movie (and book). Nobody won, even though I was rooting for all of them.,
Have a great week!

I need to watch Julie and Julia. I was disappointed by the book but I heard the movie is a lot better. I really want to see Home Again too. It looks so fun! Z is on my TBR. There’s an Amazon miniseries based of the book that looks amazing but of course I need to read the book first. Have a great week!

Thanks for visiting, Katherine, and apparently I don’t always read the book first, as I saw the Amazon Prime series before reading Z. It worked out okay.
I don’t remember much about the Julie & Julia book, even though I still have it. It’s much easier to keep watching a movie over and over…in this case, Amy Adams and Meryl Streep made the movie. The book was bland in comparison.
