HUMP DAY SERENDIPITY: BOOKISH WEDNESDAY

b-n-on-july-20-logo

Today I’m participating in Sam’s WWW Wednesdays Here’s how it works:

The Three Ws are:

What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next, and/or what are you eagerly awaiting?

***

Currently Reading:

This book has a tongue-twisting title, but the characters, the issues, and the settings are spot on.  They May Not Mean To, But They Do, by Cathleen Schine, is a story about family.  About vows, like “until death do you part,” and about the “sandwich” generation, and how they deal with ailing parents, while rearing the younger set.

The pages do not fly by, as each section and narrator bring out some heavy thoughts and show us some interactions that we must pause and consider.  I hope to finish it today, though.

JUST FINISHED:

Girl on the Run, by Daryl Wood Gerber, was a fast-paced mystery that kept me turning pages. (Click title for my review).

I had read some of the author’s cozy mysteries, so I was eager to see her take on the thriller genre.  She did not disappoint.

EAGERLY ANTICIPATING:

The Good Daughter, by Alexandra Burt, will not arrive until 2/7/17.   I requested it from NetGalley, but haven’t heard anything yet.

I read and enjoyed another book by the author (Remember Mia), so I am eagerly anticipating this book.

Synopsis:  From the author of Remember Mia comes the tale of a young woman in search of her past, and the mother who will do anything to keep it hidden…

What if you were the worst crime your mother ever committed?

Dahlia Waller’s childhood memories consist of stuffy cars, seedy motels, and a rootless existence traveling the country with her eccentric mother. Now grown, she desperately wants to distance herself from that life. Yet one thing is stopping her from moving forward: she has questions.

In order to understand her past, Dahlia must go back. Back to her mother in the stifling town of Aurora, Texas. Back into the past of a woman on the brink of madness. But after she discovers three grave-like mounds on a neighboring farm, she’ll learn that in her mother’s world of secrets, not all questions are meant to be answered…

So….that’s my reading week so far.  What does yours look like?

  1. I haven’t read any of these, but they certainly sound interesting! Mystery isn’t my usual genre, but the cover on Girl on the Run is tempting me. Would you recommend it to someone who doesn’t usually read Mystery?
Thanks for visiting my WWW. Happy reading! 🙂

    1. Hmm, that’s a good question, Sarina. The characters are well-fleshed out in this book, and if you enjoy characters, no matter what the plot, you might give this one a go. Thanks for stopping by, Sarina, and enjoy your week.

  2. A great selection as always Laurel – you have quite a wait for The Good Daughter – I knew I remembered the author but the title didn’t ring any bells – this was another book where we had an entirely different title – Little Girl Gone.
Have a great reading week and thank you for visiting and commenting on my Wednesday post.

  3. dez | the fun in reading books

I love watching mystery/thriller and I keep telling myself to READ some so I’ve been looking for some good ones. I’ll check out The Girl On The Run. 🙂

  4. They May Not Mean To, But They Do sounds good. I just looked it up on GR, and the last name of the characters is one letter shy of my last name (and it’s a not-very-common and very Jewish name, so I’m guessing the characters are Jewish?) The description also reminds me of my hubby’s extended family. Just don’t tell me there’s an Aaron character in the book, or I will start to think there is a ghost writer in his family, LOL.

  5. The summary for The Good Daughter is for some reason making me think of the middlegrade novel The Face on the Milk Carton, which is making me want to read TGD. I hope you hear back about getting it soon as it sounds properly chilling.
Thanks for visiting my WWW post, and happy reading!
