WEEKLY UPDATES: CONNECTING….

PicMonkey Collage-resized logo

Good morning! Today’s post will link up to The Sunday Salon, The Sunday Post and Stacking the Shelves, for weekly updates.

**Mailbox Monday is hosted at the home site: Mailbox Monday.

And let’s join Kathryn, our leader in It’s Monday! What Are You Reading?, at Book Date.

The weather has been very hot, but what else is new?  I did curl up inside my air-conditioned space, reading and watching movies (saw The Boss, with Melissa McCarthy) and Netflix.  I’ve been watching Doc Martin again.  The folks in that little Cornish town are hilarious.  Finished THREE books this week, and they were all different from one another, while being completely engaging.  I love when that happens.

When I was up in Crescent City, I added Skype to my iPhone, since I didn’t have my laptop with me.  We had hoped to connect with my eldest son in Prague while I was there, so my youngest son could also chat.  But the timing was always off.

However, this week, my youngest son Skyped me on my iPhone…and it worked fine.  Just like the laptop version.  He is trying to set up a time to Skype with Eldest One.  We even turned on our pictures and it was fun to see them in their living room, with Auggie (the dog), too.

In this photo from a while ago, Auggie’s the one on the right….LOL.

    1. Thanks, Heather, I am looking forward to both! I still recall what I was doing in 1973 when the news broke about the SLA and Patty Hearst. (At my desk, doing my usual social work things).

Glad you enjoyed both! Thanks for stopping by.

  1. It’s been muggy here even at night- and today we got bad storms and even a few tornado touchdowns. We didn’t lose power although a lot of people did. I like Doc Martin, I’ve seen a few episodes. I’ve also watched Happy Valley and MArcella on Netflix- have you seen either of those?

Nice pic- looks like new best friends. 🙂 Playing in the surf…

Behind Closed Doors looks good. I’ve been seeing that one around.

    1. Oh, I loved Happy Valley and Marcella….the leading lady in Happy Valley is also in Last Tango in Halifax, which I loved, too.

I would enjoy more seasons for both of those shows.

I don’t like the sound of muggy or tornadoes.

Enjoy your week, Greg, and thanks for stopping by,

It’s been super hot here too. I almost wish for fall, but then comes winter! No hurry for that. LOL Great that you finally got to connect on Skype. And fun picture of the dog and seal. Did they “bark” at each other. LOL

    1. I am eager to read Behind Closed Doors, too….and as for Skype, I was surprised to find an app for the phone; however, after talking for just a little while, the phone was very hot. Hmm.

      Thanks for visiting, Trish.

  3. I enjoyed looking at Heather’s Mexico cruise photos and out of your three reviews of past week I guess Mystic Summer appeals to me the most right now. I loved the movie Mystic Pizza way back in the day, and I love Mystic CT, been there multiple times, especially the seaport and stop at Friendly’s afterwards for ice cream.

I also bought American Heiress, though the e-book. I was fascinated back in the day by Patty Hearst and when I heard about this one I told hubs I had to read it sooner rather than later 🙂
Rosemary looks good too; always wondered about that sister that didn’t get spoken of much.

Enjoy your week ahead and stay cool and relaxed!

    1. I still recall what I was doing and where I was (at work) in 1973 when we heard the news about Patty Hearst. We followed the story and were astounded by how it all played out.

I ordered the print copy because I wanted to see the photos, and they don’t come through very well in an e-book.

The same reason for buying the hard cover of the Kennedy book.

It was fun for me seeing Heather’s photos, too, and that’s as close as I want to get to a cruise…LOL. Not a fan of “water, water everywhere!”

Thanks for visiting, Rita, and enjoy your week.

    1. Rainy days are great ones for curling up to read….and rain sounds really good right about now!

My Skyping is usually just with my eldest son, but now my younger son and DIL can do it, too. It was a nice change from texting, which is usually what they do.

Thanks for visiting, Deb, and I’ll check out your post.

  4. The Excellent Lombards looks good and is one I haven’t heard of before. Adding it to my list. If I Forget You looks good too and I’ve had the Rosemary book on my TBR for awhile. I need to get to it soon! Doc Martin sounds awesome. I’ve had it on my To Watch list for ages but haven’t watched it yet. Have a great week!

    1. Thanks, Katherine, I am enjoying The Excellent Lombards, but, for some reason, it isn’t what I was expecting. At the moment, the MC is a pre-teen, but once I settled into her perspective, it was okay.

It took me a while to warm up to Doc Martin, as the characters are kind of strange, but in a funny way, and the doc himself is wooden, not very people-friendly. His personality has grown on me, too, and I feel sorry for him for being so “misunderstood.” I am starting Season 4, and the last season ended sadly. The Cornish setting is gorgeous, though.

Enjoy your week, and thanks for stopping by.

    1. Oh, you can still read her now, Suzanne. I love her nonfiction (my favorite was Sleeping with Cats), but her fiction really defined the times. My favorites: Small Changes and Fly Away Home.

Thanks for stopping by…and enjoy your week.

  5. You’ve had a really good reading and blogging week – I’ve been thoroughly distracted, what with grandchildren AND the Olympics… I love the notion of Skyping on the phone – I’ll have to run that one by my son:) The pic of the dog on the beach with the seal in the background is amazing. Have a great week – and I hope it’s cooler for you. Anytime you want to swap the wind and rain for a bit of your sun, I’m up for it:)). Take care.

  6. I love the heat!! We have been in the 90’s.
It was only in the 70’s today and I was cold. 🙂 Not looking forward to winter.
RESULTS MAY VARY and IF I FORGET YOU look good to me.
Will be looking forward to your thoughts about BEHIND CLOSED DOORS.
    Have a wonderful week.

  7. Just as well you have air-conditioning. It’s great to skype or facetime isn’t it, so much more intimate. I bet it won’t be long before you are into that thriller Behind Closed Doors, have been seeing very positive reviews for it.

    1. I am very grateful for the AC….and it’s only stopped working once in the nine years I’ve been here (and then was promptly fixed by the management).

I am eagerly anticipating Behind Closed Doors…so many great reviews, and it looks like my kind of read. Thanks for visiting, Kathryn…and for hosting.

    1. Thanks, Lucy, I guess one of the benefits of being “older” is having lived right in the middle of something like that. Plus, the Hearst drama unfolded just a few miles north of where I live. Thanks for stopping by, and enjoy your week, too.

I am eager to read Results May Vary…glad you enjoyed it.

  8. I think I’ve said it before but Behind Closed Doors intrigues me so much! I heard great things about it. I just got All is not Forgotten though, so I’ll be reading this one first. Have a great week and I hope the weather will be good to you! 🙂

    1. Oh, yes, All Is Not Forgotten was a great read. I’m definitely eager to get going on Behind Closed Doors, and I’m grateful that there are so many wonderful thrillers around. Thanks for stopping by, Kay. Enjoy your week.

  9. Kathy Martin

Sounds like you had a great week! I have never Skyped. I chuckled when you said that a book that arrived in April was a long overdue addition to your reading list. I’m still working on books I bought before 2014. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

    1. Oh, yes, I have a few of them from 2014, too. Sometimes it feels as though I just bought them, though. Thanks for stopping by, Kathy, and Skyping is a lot of fun. I really enjoy Skyping with my European son, but the time difference makes it a challenge. So when we get on, we stay chatting for an hour or more.

    1. Oh, yes, they are, Yvonne. At first I thought they were all too weird, including Doc and Louisa, but now I’m quite fond of them, and can’t wait to see what happens next. Sadly, I am almost finished, and I don’t know if there will be more seasons. Thanks for stopping by.

    1. I had seen it in the queue on Netflix, but hadn’t really considered it until someone on a blog mentioned it, and I was between shows….so there I was, hooked as well.

I hope to get to Behind Closed Doors next…and I really want to Skype with my Prague son soon! Thanks for visiting, Nise.

  11. The Cue Card

I’m sort of interested in reading Jeffrey Toobin’s new book on Patty Hearst too. Hmm. I didn’t find Jane Hamilton’s “Lombards” as good as I wanted unfort, but I still like the author. Love your photo of the dog & sea otter! Wow. And I didn’t realize Skyping on the iphone was possible. Hmm. You’re good with the communication techno 🙂

    1. Thanks, Susan, and I didn’t realize, either. My youngest son suggested I check in the iTunes store for apps, and there it was.

Yes, I’m moving rather slowly through Lombards…It is not bad, but not as good as her other books, IMO. But I hope to finish today.

I love that photo of the “two friends,” too. Thanks for stopping by.
