WEEKLY UPDATES: FORTY YEARS AGO TODAY….

Good morning! Today’s post will link up to The Sunday Salon, The Sunday Post and Stacking the Shelves, for weekly updates.

**Mailbox Monday is hosted at the home site: Mailbox Monday.

And let’s join Kathryn, our leader in It’s Monday! What Are You Reading?, at Book Date.

It was a good week, with some great reading.  Three books read and reviewed, and my total on Read the Books You Buy Challenge is 49 books!

After slightly cooler weather (90s) for a few days, it’s back to triple digits.  I was planning to see a movie today, but will wait until tomorrow.

Today is my daughter’s 40th birthday!  She is on a cruise right now, but earlier in the week, she and I had a celebratory lunch.  Yes, I was invited on the cruise, too, but I already had my mini-vacation from August 1-4…so I bowed out.

Today I wrote a post in honor of her birthday:  A Journey with Heather:  Happy Birthday!

Heather's birthday lunch - 2016

I also did some Netflix viewing this week, finishing up Season 4 of Wentworth.  Now for a long wait until Season 5.  Meanwhile, I found a new show:  Vexed.

  1. When it gets that hot even the movie theater AC has trouble keeping up, at least in my experience. At least around here. Happy birthday to your daughter! Hope you’re enjoying your weekend. After The Girls in the Garden I’m curious about more Lisa Jewell. I Found You looks nice.

How is Wentworth? I’m sorta inbetween Netflix shows…

Firefly Summer has a nice cover.

    1. I loved Wentworth…I think I liked it even more than OITNB. Maybe it’s the Australian accents….I am a big fan of anything British or Australian. LOL.

Thanks for stopping by, and I have enjoyed several Lisa Jewell books….my first one was The House We Grew Up In, which I highly recommend.

      Thanks for stopping by, Greg.

    1. Ha-ha. Yes, I’m sitting on the couch with the AC on as low as it can reasonably go…LOL. I’m in California’s Central Valley, and I think we’re the hottest part of the state. However, the valley does extend for many miles, from Bakersfield to Stockton or so. I think Sacramento is officially in Northern California.

Thanks for visiting, Karen, and enjoy a cold drink while you’re thinking of our temperatures…

    1. Thanks, Lexxie. Since she’s my youngest, it feels especially strange. I remember being her age and starting over again as a single mom. What years those were, but there were some good times.

Thanks for stopping by, and have a great week.

It’ll be back up into the triple digits tomorros (Sunday) for us here. I’m not looking forward to it. Happy birthday to your daughter! She’s slightly younger than I am (and I just realized this means my brother turns 40 this year!). 🙂 Your birthday post to your daughter was beautiful, Laurel-Rain.

Your summer reading choices both sound good. I’m enjoying my current book, The Whiskey Sea. Love the writing.

    Have a great week, Laurel-Rain!

    1. Thanks for stopping by, Wendy, and it seems like just the other day that I was 40 as well. But…I am enjoying retirement and not having to get up early every day. LOL. But I still find myself wide awake early, only slightly later.

The triple digits are difficult, but thankfully, there’s AC. Today I am thinking of going to the movies and enjoying their AC, which is always colder than mine, for some reason. Enjoy your reading!

    1. I just stumbled upon Wentworth a while ago, and was hooked right away. Hope you give it a go. I am very excited about Behind Closed Doors, and I hope we both enjoy it. Thanks for stopping by, Grace, and have a great week.

The American Girl and Faithful sound great — I hope you enjoy them. Also, happy birthday to your daughter. I will have to check out your post. Have a fantastic week!

  4. Happy belated birthday to your daughter. Hope she’s having fun on the cruise. My wife’s been watching Wentworth and enjoying it. We just finished watching Lovesick (unfortunate title at first: Scrotal Recall), which was surprisingly good, and are looking forward to watching The Get Down, both on Netflix too.

    1. Thanks, Bryan, and I’m sure she is having fun. She seems to know how to enjoy every moment.

I’m now curious about Lovesick, and will check it out. Hope you have a great week, and thanks for stopping by.

  5. Glad to hear you had cooler temps (LOL) this past week. So did I. I’m not looking forward to the higher temps this coming week. Especially since I head back to work. The heat makes it hard for the kids to settle down for a new school year. This starting before Labor Day thing is stupid!

Happy Birthday to your daughter! It’s nice she planned something nice for her 40th birthday. I hope she has a wonderful time. Too bad you didn’t get to go, but I’m sure you’re loving the pictures she’s probably sending you. Enjoy your week!

    1. Thanks, Angel, and I am looking forward to the pix, which I’m sure she’ll send soon! LOL. She is too busy having fun to go on FB, even.

I didn’t have anything special for my 40th birthday, but I’ve had a few good ones since then.

Enjoy your week, and thanks for visiting.

    1. Thanks, Cleo, there are so many lovely authors I’m enjoying since I began blogging. Of course, our TBR stacks are impossible, aren’t they? I loved the slightly cooler weather, and I’m eager for my daughter to get back and share her photos, etc. Thanks for stopping by, Cleo…

  6. Family Tree is on my wishlist. I always enjoy Susan Wiggs’ books.

I love Wentworth, but I didn’t know season 4 was out. Now I have something to watch 🙂

It’s been hot and humid here. I’m enjoying the a/c 🙂

    1. I realized Season 4 was out when I was at the beach and scrolling Netflix on my son’s Blu-Ray…so it probably had just come out.

Of course it didn’t take long to watch all the episodes!

I am really looking forward to Family Tree.

The AC at the movies today was awesome. Until I stepped outside and the temperature was 113!

Back at home, I’m cooler again, but not as icy cold as the theater. Enjoy your week, and thanks for visiting, Yvonne.

  7. It’s been crazy hot here, too, and so much humidity. I can’t imagine having temps in the 90s being the cooler days. Yikes! Belated happy birthday to your daughter. SO nice that she invited you to go on the cruise, too, even if you decided not to. Stay cool this week!

    1. Yes, I thought about going…for about five minutes. I’m not a fan of being “contained,” whether it’s on a boat or in a plane. LOL.

But I’m glad she enjoys that kind of thing.

Today was back in the triple digits, and so was yesterday. Thanks for stopping by, JoAnn…enjoy your week!

Happy Birthday to your daughter! It’s hot here again and I hate having to go outside. A movie theater is a nice place to stay cool but you have to step out into the heat to get there lol. There are so many shows I want to watch on Netflix but we’ve been watching the Olympics. Hopefully I’ll get to Netflix once the Olympics is over. I hope you stay cool and have a nice week! Happy reading!

    1. I almost didn’t go to the movie, thinking about walking through the heat before and after. But I did go. It was a good movie with Meryl Streep: Florence Foster Jenkins.

Thanks for stopping by, Kathy, and thanks for the birthday wishes. Enjoy your Netflix and reading.

  9. I wish your daughter a very happy birthday and hope she enjoys her cruise! I want to do something special for my 40th in a couple of years but I get motion sickness so I think I’ll stick to dry land 🙂

You have several books on your list that look good to me, especially the one by Lisa Jewell (which I think I’d have to buy from Book Depository) and Family Tree. I liked Mystic Summer.

Hope you have a great week and are able to stay cool. I’ve been complaining about temps in the low 90s here.

    1. I prefer dry land, too, although I love looking at the water, or sitting next to it.

I hope you find the perfect venue for your 40th birthday….I don’t remember doing anything special for mine, but I’ve had some other birthdays that were very celebratory.

Thanks for stopping by, Christina, and I always enjoy Lisa Jewell, now that I have discovered her through blogging.

  10. Heather looks beautiful as always, but don’t be insulted if I say that I like her current hairstyle the most 🙂 -she is, after all, a hair pro!
I have most of your titles on my wishlist to read sometime. I enjoyed Blood Defense and Faithful too. Have a relaxing, and hopefully cooler, week.

    1. Oh, of course the current style is better! I don’t know what we were thinking in the 70s and 80s.

I’m glad she learned to style hair, as I also benefit from her expertise….she does my cut and color regularly.

Enjoy your week, Rita, and thanks for stopping by.

    1. Oh, yes, I’ve been through Utah as well. Desert heat is dry, and the way it looks there enhances that heat, IMO. Our heat is bad enough…but we have good AC here…LOL. And it’s not a desert.

Still…if I hadn’t settled in here, and been here so long, I would also love to retreat to cooler climes. Even rainy ones! Thanks for stopping by, Jane, and yes, 40 is a milestone, and I’m sure my daughter felt the same way many of us did: oh, no, I’m no longer young, so let’s party until we forget about that part.

Hence the Fab Forty Cruise she arranged for her friends.

Thanks for stopping by, and enjoy your cooler weather.

    1. Thanks, Di, and I’m definitely eager to stay indoors in the AC and read! I did go to the movies yesterday, and it was chillin’ in there…but then the heat hit me afterwards, and it felt as though I hadn’t been cool at all.

      Enjoy your week….thanks for visiting.

    1. Thanks, Kathy, and what did you see? I also went, and saw Florence Foster Jenkins. It was different than anything else I’ve seen with Meryl Streep, and I’m still trying to sort through my feelings on it..

I will read today…and maybe go out to check the mailbox for more books ( I have a PO box, so I have to drive there). Enjoy your week.
