SERENDIPITOUS SATURDAYS: CLEARING & CHANGING

Good morning, and welcome to my Serendipitous Saturday Snapshot post.  Meet the other participants over at West Metro Mommy Reads.

As some of you know, I’ve been doing a lot of purging lately.  Books, mostly…and this week, I also cleared out some old VHS tapes from a shelf in my office and rearranged the ones I wanted to keep—you know, the ones I can’t find a DVD for—and here’s what that shelf looks like now.  The books that were on the bottom shelf are now in the library collection box in the garage.  And now the tapes live there.

An old wicker shelf that held those tapes…now, also gone, to find a new use elsewhere, below; tucked between a couple of cabinets, it holds overflow books (mainly a few chunksters) and odds and ends:

I even took away more of the books on the filing cabinet in my book nook, below right; there is now only one row of books there, and they are my signed copies of books; everything else…to the library box:

My new print book mountain is also smaller, as I slowly read them…and stop buying so many.  Yes, I still download to Sparky, but those books don’t take up the same kind of space.

Over in the adjacent village where my daughter took over my youngest son’s house, she has done a different kind of purging.  The garage and yard needed clearing, and here’s what she accomplished, with the help of a friend; chopping up and discarding an old hot tub:

And finally, to the curb; the city periodically collects whatever residents put out there:

Meanwhile, in the extreme north part of our state, my son and his wife have “escaped” to a different kind of life here:

We all make different choices, and sometimes the things we purge or discard tell us a little about what we value, while what remains could be something simpler…or, at least, tidier.

What are you spotlighting today?  I hope you’ll stop by and share.

    1. I think it’s the Season of the Never-Ending Purge, Patty…LOL. And my daughter is in the mood to enjoy the house that my son and his wife found too time-consuming…and I love that I get to still see their house on the lovely street, with my daughter’s spin on it. Meanwhile, I want to head up north to see their little cozy home in the woods.

  1. My DH and I, well mostly me, cleared one closet yesterday before we “pooped out”. I still have a stack of papers to shred and to decide just how long I should keep investment statements and such. The paper wars never end it seems. On the book front, I did “share” 2 print books that had been “shared” with me, so they are not laying around. I really must start a library donation box.

    1. I started with the “shredding” kind of purge a few months ago, and that was the most tedious; and it was definitely not fun! I am trying to keep up and shred some things regularly, like old bills. I haven’t yet gone “paperless” with the bank and bills, but I’m tempted. Thanks for stopping by, Judy.

  2. You’ve inspired me, Laurel. My goal this week is to go through the books on my shelves I know I’ll never get around to reading. The library sale will benefit and I’ll feel better 🙂

    1. I guess I got motivated when I started with the paper shredding…I had bins of documents that finally “aged out,” and I was happy to clear those bins. From there, I moved on to books….thanks for stopping by, Sharon.

  3. I purged my VHS tapes recently and even some DVDs. It’s almost time for another book purge. Now paperwork, that I should do ASAP. It’s always interesting to see other people’s purges and how they do them. Too bad about the hot tub, I’m sure someone could have used it. Oh well.

  4. I try and clear out clutter but my efforts tend to be meagre, they need to be bigger. I do give away books as I read them, but then end up buying more than I can read anyway. But VHS tapes, I don’t think we even have a player for them anymore. Not sure if you can give them away here. They would go to landfill I guess.

    1. My VCR is a combination DVD player/VCR, and I’ve only had it for five years or so. I don’t know if I just happened to get the last one they made, or if they are still around. LOL

Some movies, the older ones especially, don’t come in the DVD format, which is why I hung onto some of the VHS tapes.

      Thanks for stopping by, Louise.
