Welcome to some serendipitous fun today as we share Book Beginnings, hosted by Rose City Reader; and as we showcase The Friday 56 with Freda’s Voice.

To join in, just grab a book and share the opening lines…along with any thoughts you wish to give us; then turn to page 56 and excerpt anything on the page.

Then give us the title of the book, so others can add it to their lists!

My choice today is a book from next week’s reading stack.  Son of Rosemary, by Ira Levin, is the sequel to Rosemary’s Baby.  It has been on Mt. TBR for several years.

Son of Rosemary opens at the dawn of the new millennium—a time when human hope is shadowed by growing fear and uncertainty, and the world is in greatest need of a savior.  It is here—against the glittering backdrop of New York City in 1999—that Rosemary is reunited with her son.  It is also here that the battle between good and evil will be played out on a global scale—a struggle that will have frightening, far-reaching consequences, not only for Rosemary and her son but for all of humanity.

Beginning:  In Manhattan, on the crisp, clear morning of Tuesday, November 9, 1999, Dr. Stanley Shand, a retired dentist twice divorced, leaves his apartment on Amsterdam Avenue for his daily constitutional.  Though eighty-nine he walks vigorously, his plaid-capped head erect, his eyes bright.  He is buoyed both by good health and a secret, a glorious secret that warms his every waking moment.

Now I’m curious….what more could be unleashed upon unsuspecting people?  I’m pretty sure his secret is not going to turn out well!

p. 56:  “YOW!  JESUS!”  Van Buren dropped the knife and clutched his hand, red blood dripping on white turkey breast.

Now I’m off to see what the rest of you are spotlighting today!  Happy Friday!

  1. This reminds me of the movie ‘Rosemary’s Baby’, but I’m sure it has nothing to do with that! I like the beginnings, it sets tone beautifully. Hope you have a great weekend and thanks for stopping by”

    • Actually, this is the “baby” grown up…a sequel. I saw a few of the reviews, though, and now I’m thinking it, like many sequels, won’t live up to the first book. Thanks for visiting, Juli, and enjoy your weekend.

  2. Rosemary Son, Nawwww. I remember the movie. enjoyed reading the beginning and page 56 snippet you provided. now, im wondering why blood on a white turkey breast too.

  3. I remember trying to watch Rosemary’s Baby and being scared witless….lol….I’m a big chicken…this book does sound interesting though.

    Here’s my Friday Meme Post

  4. I like the beginning. I’m not sure why, but I get the feeling his ‘glorious secret’ might lead to some glorious blackmail or a glorious crime.

  5. First thing that came to my mind was Rosemary’s Baby! Then I thought about the anti- Christ. I love good over evil stories, especially the Bible. It would be nice to skip through or race real fast past the scary parts and get to the happy ending!

  6. What a blast from the past! Haven’t thought about this book in years . . . Enjoy your trip down memory lane.

Thanks for visiting from the Book Beginnings meme.
